DIGIT Membership

Who Is It For?
DIGIT offers admission to a select number of highly qualified PhD students and postdoctoral fellows from Norwegian institutions annually until 2028. Additionally, we invite a limited number of 'young researchers,' defined as individuals who have completed their PhD within the last 7 years, to join the school.

Applicants must be engaged in research that intersects with digitalization, culture, and society. While many of our members come from social sciences or humanities backgrounds, we are open to candidates from other fields, provided their research aligns with our thematic focus. Admission to DIGIT requires a fundemental interest in exploring technology and digitalization from a social science and/or humanities perspective.

Two-Phase Admission Process
Starting in 2024, DIGIT introduces a two-phase admission process. During the first phase, we will only consider applications from candidates who 1) are affiliated with our partner universities (OsloMet, UiO, Nord, UiB, NTNU, UiA, and USN), and 2) expect to defend their thesis or complete their project May 2026 or after. This ensures their ability to engage fully in our comprehensive two-year program.

Candidates not meeting these specific criteria will have the opportunity to apply in the second phase of admission, which begins in September 2024, subject to the availability of spaces within the program.

Our goal is to include representatives from each of our partner institutions in every DIGIT class. To achieve this, we limit the number of acceptances from any single institution in the initial phase of admission.

What Does a Membership Include?

As a DIGIT member, you will participate in a two-year program that includes academic courses, writing seminars, secondment opportunities, professional activities, and networking. Each new DIGIT class begins with a mandatory kick-off course in the autumn, while participation in the rest of our activities is voluntary.

Our program is offered free of charge, and we co-fund travel and accommodation expenses for attending our events. However, 'Young Researcher' members must fund their participation in the program themselves.

The Two-Year Programme

The two-year programme offers writing courses, internship opportunities, professional activities and networking both within and outside the university environment, nationally and internationally.

The kick-off course, held in November/December, is a time for participants and partners to meet and engage in a professional programme comprising relevant lectures, group discussions, scenario workshops with non-academic partners, and more.
This 3-day seminar in Brussels occurs bi-annually during the spring semester and includes lectures on topics such as the EU's digital strategy and funding opportunities within the Horizon Europe programme.
DIGIT offers writing workshops and media- and communication training for its members, including writing retreats and opportunities for co-writing and co-research.
DIGIT members can apply for work experiences outside the academic world through secondment opportunities at our stakeholders partner institutions.
